Nothing That Belongs to Him
Allen Mercer wakes with a skyline and a headache — and no proof the face in the glass is his. Book One begins in the gap.
Allen Mercer does not wake into a biography.
He wakes into a skyline, a headache, and a stretch of cold pavement that does not care who he was. The glass nearby shows a face. It might be his. It might be a stranger the city already filed under someone else’s name. He has no proof either way.
That is where Shadows of the Forgotten starts. Not with a tour. Not with a lecture. With a gap.
The wound is the point
Plenty of stories hurry to fill an amnesia hole with a speech and a map. I did not want that. If a regime can erase a person, the first honest sentence is not what he remembers. It is what he cannot.
Techno-Synth owns the cameras, the billboards, the quiet scripts that tell a city who it is allowed to be. Allen arrives after those scripts have already closed a door on him. The regime does not need to explain itself. It needs him gone. That pressure is enough. The rest stays on the page.
I am not interested in softening the blank for the reader’s comfort. The blank is the engine. What he lost — and who already paid to find him — is pressure, not a spoiler dump.
A door, not a brochure
Mia Turner does not hand him a brochure. She offers a war. That post is already live. This one is the other hinge: the man who cannot prove the face in the glass, standing in a city that never stops watching.
Hard dystopian Sci-Fi, for me, keeps the lights on and the lie running. Identity is the currency. If the system can strip who you were, it can script who you become. Rebellion is not a costume. It is the refusal to let the script finish writing you before you get a say.
Found family in this series is expensive. Provisional. Real because it can fail. I will not name every seat at that table here. You meet them when Allen does.

Allen remembers none of it.
The city remembers enough.
Nothing that belongs to him.
That is the door.
